Cover Crop Usage ahead of cash crops

This spring left us with higher than normal prevent plant acres across the region.  If you're looking for something to help get those fields ready for next season, cover crops are a great option.  Much like the rotations used around our area fields that will be going to grass crops should apply legumes as a cover crop, and fields going to soybeans should utilize grasses as a cover this summer. A carbon to nitrogen ration is important to consider. The higher the ratio, the longer it will take plants to decompose and release their nutrients to the soil. A 24:1 ratio is ideal.  In general, legumes have relatively low C:N ratios and grains have higher C:N ratios. A mix of the two will help get you in the target range.

Soil Testing Pays Big Dividends

Maple River Grain & Agronomy added soil sampling services in 2018, as more and more growers began taking a hard look at crop input expenses. Although grid and zone sampling offer a more complete picture of your soil’s nutrient and pH status, even whole field sampling can tell us a lot.
